No One Rides Alone: Sam’s Story

In the world of cycling, there’s an unspoken bond among riders—a camaraderie built on miles of shared effort, challenges, and triumphs. But when an accident happens, that same community can be a lifeline in ways you never expect. That’s exactly what Sam Beale experienced when the Van Purser Foundation stepped in as he faced one of his toughest challenges.

Cycling has been a huge part of Sam’s life. Whether it's early morning rides before the world wakes up, long weekend routes with friends, or the thrill of pushing himself to new limits, cycling isn’t just his hobby—it’s his passion. It’s where he finds freedom, challenge, and community all wrapped into one.

Like many avid cyclists, he loved the open road, the smell of nature, and the exhilaration of pushing his limits. But one ride changed everything. It was a typical Tuesday night ride–one he had done dozens of times before. Sam was cruising down a familiar stretch of road at the tail end of the peloton when suddenly, a car failed to yield at an intersection. In that split second, he had no time to react before the impact sent him crashing onto the pavement.

The crash left him with serious injuries, sidelining him from the sport he loved. Beyond the physical pain, the emotional and financial strain of the accident was overwhelming. That’s when the Van Purser Foundation stepped in.

A Community That Lifts Its Own

The Van Purser Foundation supports cyclists and their families in times of need. Named in honor of Van Purser, a beloved cyclist and leader in our community, the foundation embodies his spirit of generosity, encouragement, and unwavering support.

When Sam found himself facing mounting medical bills and the daunting road to recovery, the foundation didn’t just offer financial assistance. They provided something far more powerful: a sense of belonging, hope, and encouragement. Through their assistance, Sam was able to focus on healing without the added burden of financial stress. But more than that, he saw firsthand what it means to be part of a community that truly cares for its own.

The Comeback Ride

Weeks of hard work and determination led to a moment Sam would never forget—his first race after the accident. He entered with no expectations, simply grateful to be back in the saddle. But as he powered through the final stretch and crossed the finish line of the first sprint zone—taking first place in an annual race against nearly 100 cycling friends he had ridden and raced with for years—the emotions were overwhelming. It wasn’t just a victory on the bike; it was a testament to his resilience and the community that had lifted him up.

Today, as he clips into his pedals once again, Sam rides with a renewed sense of gratitude—not just for his recovery, but also for the people who made it possible.

For those who love cycling, accidents are an unfortunate reality, but the Van Purser Foundation ensures that no one rides alone. Whether it’s financial aid, emotional support, or simply knowing that someone cares, the foundation is a testament to the power of community and the spirit of cycling.
