Legacy in Motion: Wayne’s Story
As the founding board of the Van Purser Foundation met with Van in his final months, conversations naturally turned to legacy—not in the abstract, but in the very real lives of others. Van expressed a simple, heartfelt desire: that his story might become a source of help for fellow cyclists in times of need.
He didn’t define exactly what those moments would look like. But over the past few years, we’ve seen his vision take shape in deeply personal ways.
Facing A Tough Road
One such example is Wayne Johnson, a familiar and respected presence in the local cycling community. Many know Wayne from group rides with Cycle Alpharetta, the Goats, and Olde Blind Dog. He’s the kind of rider who shows up, encourages others, and quietly strengthens the fabric of the community.
In early 2025, Wayne and his family faced a series of significant challenges. His wife suffered a stroke, requiring a long and demanding recovery. Midway through the year, Wayne lost his job as a product owner. Then, only weeks later, he was involved in a crash on the Silver Comet Trail that resulted in multiple broken ribs.
It was a difficult season—physically, emotionally, and financially.
Walking Alongside One Another
Like many who are used to being strong for others, Wayne carried these burdens quietly. But in time, he shared with a fellow cyclist and VPF care team member that he could use some help, much like a rider needing a wheel or a steady push when the pace becomes too much alone.Because of the generosity of those who support the Van Purser Foundation, we were able to come alongside Wayne in September 2025 with a contribution to help cover COBRA payments and other pressing expenses.
It was a simple act, but a meaningful one.
A Community Living Out the Vision
And in many ways, it reflected exactly what Van had hoped for: neighbors helping neighbors, cyclists supporting cyclists, in moments that truly matter. Wayne’s response captured it best:
“You and the foundation have made my life a lot easier. I greatly appreciate it.”
That “you” is every person who has chosen to give—quietly, faithfully, and compassionately.
This is what Van envisioned and this is how his legacy continues to ride forward.
