The Road to Recovery: Mitch’s Inspiring Story
A Bond Forged in Service
Mitch Lewandowski met Van Purser on a bike ride nearly 16 years ago, and they clicked instantly, bonding over shared interests, including a heart for service. Before the Van Purser Foundation was even a thought, Van, Bo Reese, and Mitch often discussed what the cycling community could look like if it embraced a more servant-hearted approach. They envisioned the Webb Bridge Ride as a place where cyclists could support each other and build genuine camaraderie. This vision led to the creation of Domestique Leadership, an organization dedicated to developing ride leaders and promoting a compassionate and supportive cycling culture.
The Birth of the Van Purser Foundation
Tragically, in 2018, Van was diagnosed with ALS, which sparked the creation of the Van Purser Foundation. This organization was established with the same spirit that drove Domestique Leadership: caring for and uplifting cyclists and the cycling community, a role Van exemplified in his everyday life. Van was highly intentional, pursued relationships, and served others, all through a kingdom lens.
Mitch's Life-Threatening Battle
Almost a year after Van’s passing, Mitch faced his own life-threatening crisis. On August 2, 2020, he was diagnosed with a critical case of Covid-19. Just a week later, he was rushed to the hospital, put on a ventilator, and placed in a medically induced coma. Despite an especially grim prognosis, Mitch continued to fight. Over 2,000 family members and friends held steadfast in prayer, and one month later, he miraculously awoke. “Miracle Mitch” beat the odds most spectacularly, astonishing everyone, including the entire healthcare community.
A Remarkable Recovery
Even during his recovery, Mitch continued to defy expectations. He moved from the ICU to a standard room, and after 10 days, he transitioned to intensive rehabilitation. Despite severe atrophy that left him unable to walk and a tracheostomy that affected his speech recovery, Mitch reached critical milestones with remarkable speed. Though doctors expected him to be home by Christmas, he was discharged from rehab on September 29.
A Heartwarming Homecoming
On the day of his discharge, to his surprise, the entire cycling community gathered at his house to welcome him home. “There was a mob of cyclists surrounding the house. It was just crazy that they all showed up for me,” he said. The Van Purser Foundation was there and presented him with a generous check to help cover expenses or use however he needed while he got back on his feet. “I felt the love and support of these amazing people who were there for me and my family when we needed it most. Even more, it was in honor and memory of Van Purser, my closest cycling friend.”
For Mitch, this outpouring of support was ironic. He’s always been the one giving and helping others—donating bike parts, offering cycling advice, refurbishing bikes, and giving them away. "Cycling is just my jam," he said. "I’ve been into it for over 50 years."
A Reflection of Faith and Purpose
Reflecting on his hospital stay and his recovery, Mitch recalls a sense of peace, knowing he was in the center of God’s plan for his life. “Having faith in the Lord gave me 100 percent assurance that He had me in this place, and for the additional time He has given me here on this earth, for His glory. Those months have been the most challenging of my life but also the richest. God’s plan, the people He put in my life, and the purpose He has called me into are all blessings.”
Continuing Van's Legacy
The Van Purser Foundation’s mission extends beyond supporting cyclists and their families in times of unexpected need. It embodies a spirit of selfless service, constantly asking, "How can I serve you? How can I better my community? How can I uplift those around me and help them thrive?" Mitch credits Van for profoundly impacting his life and shaping who he is today through his exemplary servant heart and unwavering dedication to others. Today, Van’s legacy lives on through the Van Purser Foundation, continuing to inspire and guide us in building a supportive, fun, compassionate cycling community.
